Named after the much-loved Headmistress of Ashford Girls’ School, Miss Lilian Brake (1928-1955), members of The Lilian Brake Legacy Society have left designated gifts to the School in their wills, donated towards our bursary fund or other areas of interest, such as capital projects.

A legacy is one of the simplest and most flexible ways of making your gift and allows you to support the School in a way in which you may not be able to do during your lifetime. The tax benefits of a legacy gift to the Foundation are considerable – all such bequests can be made free from Inheritance Tax and Capital Gains Tax, so you could reduce the total tax burden levied on your estate to your family. Recent legacies have ranged from a few hundred pounds, to a collection of books, to a whole estate and have been received from past pupils and former staff.

Lilian Brake Legacy Society Annual Luncheon

Each year our Headmaster, Mr Michael Hall, hosts an event for our Legacy Club members, and for those who are interested in finding out more about the Lilian Brake Legacy Society.

These are an opportunity for us to renew acquaintances and for our members to hear about the exciting things happening at the School, and for Ashford School to be able to thank you for your support.

For prospective members it is a chance for you to meet other members, or ask questions of the School about our future plans before committing your future support for our work.

The next lunch will take in March 2023 at Ashford Senior School, with an optional tour of the Senior School site.

The Waterman Collection

The Waterman Collection is the result of a legacy left to the Learning Resource Centre by a local resident, Reginald Robert Waterman.

Mr Waterman died in 2017. In his will, he expressed the wish that we should receive his extensive personal library. His collection was so large that we were only able to accept a small number of books. The rest were sold, and the proceeds used to purchase books and DVDs to expand the library resources. In choosing new material, we wanted to honour the spirit of this generous bequest. Therefore, the collection reflects Mr Waterman’s passion for art, literature, history and culture.

"I loved my time at Ashford under Miss Brake and made many friends who I still see. I'm delighted that new generations of pupils are being given such a great start in life. Thinking in centuries, rather than years, must be in our minds when we consider the future of the School. Small though our individual legacies may be their collective impact underpins the Ashford School of today. I'm leaving something to support our School's future.
