Lower Sixth pupil, Karen Ge, won second place at the Area Public Speaking competition earlier this week on behalf of the Ashford School Young Enterprise team.
Karen’s chosen topic for the competition was an exploration of the ethics involved in removing the popular reality tv programme 'Big Brother' from tv. With a well balanced argument, she looked at the impact of the show as a social experiment which enhances the lives and personalities of the people that take part against the opinion that the show is simply an exercise for the media to abuse the situations of others in order to create a celebrity culture to raise money and status for themselves.
Karen was praised by the judges for her speech and was awarded 2nd place to a speaker at Bethany School who had also chosen a speech on Big Brother.
The Young Enterprise meets once a week as a co-curricular activity and involves pupils creating and running a business in order to learn and understand the procedures and processes running behind it. There are a number of competitions involved to enhance the understanding of business activities and develop skills as a public speaker.
