Squires Celebrate St George

Each year the 6 houses at Ashford School have a fund raising day for their house with the proceeds from the day going to the house’s chosen charities.

Squires House fundraising day was 30th April (1 week after St. George’s day) so they chose to run a typically English village fete (in keeping with the St. George/English theme).

In the course of a week the 65 pupils in Squires House put their heads together and brought in prizes, cakes and equipment to create a fete including Giant Hoopla, Tin Can Alley, Space Hopper Racing, Lawn Darts, Frisbee Target Challenge, Bean Bag and Ladder, Netball Shooting Against the Clock, Golf Chipping, Teacher in the Stocks and Steady Hand Game stalls, as well as Homemade Cakes, Face Painting, Ice Creams and a Cold Drinks stall selling old favourites such as Cream Soda, Ginger Beer, Dandelion and Burdock and Cloudy Lemonade.

Friday was a flower themed non-uniform day with pupils and staff coming to school dressed in their most floral outfits and flowers in their hair. During Friday lunch-time, which miraculously became bright and sunny at just the right moment, the whole school turned out to take part in the fun, games and competitions, and for forty-five minutes you could have been forgiven for forgetting you were at a school and believed that you had been transported to a village fete at the height of summer anywhere in the Garden of England.

The event raised £600 which will be shared between Squires chosen charities – Water Aid and the Autism Trust.

Flushed with success Squires House have already pledged to stage an even bigger and better fete next year and are keeping their fingers crossed for good weather!

This is a short video of the day, hosted on our youtube channel.
