It's been a busy few weeks in the PE department! With Granville League athletics and Kent netball tournaments, and even the staff v students netball match, there has been plenty of activity with the recent warm weather.
NETBALL
The Year 7 girls have just had their first experience of a Kent Netball Tournament as an Ashford team. Playing 7 matches altogether the girls gained great experience and were successfull in winning 3, losing 3 and drawing one.
The staff v students netball match yet again proved that the boys on the staff team need a bit more practice and drilling to learn the rules, but it was their first netball game so they were forgiven their footwork and distance problems! It did work out to be an exciting game of 4 quarters and the eventual score was 12-12, a fair result.
KENT YOUTH GAMES
The Kent Youth Games were held at the Julie Rose stadium with schools from Maidstone and Ashford District competing for the year 7 boys and girls titles. With 8 competitors per team, and two events plus a relay per individual, all the participants competed with enthusiasm and great performance by Lu-Lu Ogunnuga and Euan Nicholls winning their events. Overall the girls finished third but a great team performance by the boys meant a winning performance!
KENT SCHOOLS TRACK AND FIELD
The Kent Schools Track and Field competition saw the Ashford School junior boys finish third ahead of Duke of Yorks, Pent Valley and Brockhill. There were a number of outstanding performances, especially from Euan Nicholls in the 1500m, Folarin Ogunsola in the 400m and Callam Tiernan in the discus. The intermediate boys finished 2nd behind Chatham Grammar for boys. Outstanding performances came from Callum Thomas in the Javelin, Quazim Omotosho in the discus, Max Nicholls in the 1500m and Dominic Savia-Roscoe in the 200m.
ENGLISH SCHOOLS TRACK AND FIELD
On Wednesday 19th May we competed in the English Schools Track and Field Cup. The girls' Y7/8 team competed superbly with outstanding wins by Bea Icke in the 1500m, Rebecca Gardner in the 800m, Katie Keet in the 200m, Lu-Lu Ogunnuga in the High Jump, Miranda Stracey in the hurdles and Sophie Ledger in the shot. This meant the girls won the day with 232 points - 44 points ahead of Folkestone Grammar! They now wait to see who they compete against in the next round of the competition. Well done girls!
The Y9/10 team also competed at the same event and achieved some excellent results including Toochi Ogbonnah in the 100m, Millie Piper in the hurdles with personal best in the high jump of 1.47, and Sophie Buchanan in the shot putt. This meant the girls were in contention for first place before the relay but sadly the score for the relay was not counted as one of the girls ran but had already competed in her allotted events which meant third place overall. However, this didn't spoil the other successes and an excellent effort was given by all the girls.
GRANVILLE LEAGUE
Held at Dover for the Granville League, the under 18 Athletics Match took place with the Ashford seniors a few down on a full team. However, they competed with enthusiasm and determination and a highlight of the day was a superb win in the 100m by Toby Kasali!
At the Granville League U15 competition there was an excellent performance by both teams with Millie Piper leading the way with a win in the high jump and 60m. The boys excelled in various events with Callum Thomas winning the Javelin, Max Nicholls the 1500m and 1500m steeplechase, Geoff Perkins winning the 400m and Quasim Omotosho winning the Discus. The girls finished third but the boys finished 1st!
