At Ashford School we believe our ethos "Adventurous learning" is a part of everything we do. We also believe that it involves everybody; staff and pupils! Over the summer holidays Dr Sue Childs one of our maths teachers completed a 140mile bike ride from Eastbourne to Winchester along the beautiful South Downs.
"In one section I went off the trail and ended up in a small quarry, not wanting to retrace my steps I ploughed on, across two barbed wire fences, good thing my bike is pretty light! I managed to find another foot path only to find myself in a steep field with a very large herd of cattle complete with bull. I very gingerly crept my way around. It was a steep climb back up to the official path but it was a pretty fast climb!!"
The inspiring scenery had a great impact on Dr Childs who said ‘The south Downs have many steep climbs interspersed with beautiful down land stretches. It really feels as though you are connecting with ancient people, imagining all those who must have passed over these same paths for thousands of years.'
It took Sue 5 days to complete the journey. The challenge is an impressive feat of endurance as the total climb is the equivalent of biking up Mt Snowdon 3 times!
Congratulations to Sue Childs for completing such a successful trip. We wait to hear news of further "adventures".
