Year 6 crack the secrets of wartime!

On Thursday 16th September, Year 6 went on a History trip to the Secret Wartime Tunnels at Dover Castle as part of their project on WWII. The group experienced the difficulties the surgeons would have faced while operating on wounded airmen salvaged from the English Channel .  They were also able to see the operation room where Admiral Ramsey oversaw Operation Dynamo (The miracle of Dunkirk) and later the preparations for D-Day.

The Year 6s then visited the Battle of Britain airfield at Hawkinge. They saw replicas of many of the devices and initiatives that were so important to leading us to victory in WWII including planes, an Anderson shelter, a Dig for Victory garden, a V1 rocket and many other wonderful artefacts.

The trip enabled the children to gain further understanding of what life on the home front would have been like. The group were complimented on their exemplary behaviour by members of the public and overall the trip was a great success.
