Last week The Ashford school MFL department set up a series of workshops and events to celebrate World Languages Week. Students were reminded that we live in a multilingual and multicultural society; our planet has over 6 billion people who speak between 6000 and 7000 different languages. Some of the exciting activities included international speed dating, French Theatre, Origami, Flamenco dancing, international Karaoke ‘Ashford school does Eurovision' and more!
The Flamenco dancing was a particular success, two professional flamenco dancers Anita and Marco performed in assembly and then spent all day with different year groups teaching them how to do the basic ‘burlerias' (steps) and two different ‘palmadas' (clapping techniques).
Head of Modern foreign languages Jenni Van Deelan said;
Over the course of the week we encouraged our students to think of themselves as global citizens in the widest possible sense, and to be adventurous in their attitude and openness towards other languages. It was really inspiring to hear so many different languages shared and enjoyed by staff and students across the whole age range of the school.
The House MFL quiz had all year groups eagerly researching, Googling and lingo-searching in order to gain points in the MFL competition, eventually won by Squires, who scored a clean sweep in the quiz and the poetry composition.
Congratulations to Squires who won the competition and many thanks to those who came to show us different activities and cultures from across the world. It was a rich and diverse week and thoroughly enjoyed by all!
