On Wednesday 13 October students from Ashford School went to the River Darent in north Kent to undertake geographical fieldwork. Year 11 and year 12 students conducted an investigation into how the channel size and shape and the velocity of the river change downstream. Students used an array of equipment to measure and record their data at 10 sites as we moved downstream from the source area near Westerham to the mouth near Dartford. For year 11 the data will be analysed in order for them to write up their controlled assessment which forms part of their GCSE exams, for year 12 students it is an opportunity to conduct a primary investigation which they will write about in their geographical skills AS exam. It was a fabulous dry day, even with glimmers of sunshine in the afternoon, and the students worked hard to collect an excellent set of data at all 10 sites, as we had intended, and had great fun to boot.
