Geography

Geography is taught once a week in Pre-Prep and in Year 1, centres around ‘Our Local Area’.

Across the year, the children will learn fieldwork and observational skills as they study the geography of Ashford Prep School and its grounds. The children learn about the village of Great Chart and compare it some of the villages and towns in which they live. We go for walks through the village spotting the different land uses and types of homes. The children learn about human and physical features of Geography and enjoy spotting examples of these features in and around the school grounds. Alongside this, the children will learn about the countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom and learn fundamental information, key geographical vocabulary and important skills such as using maps, atlases and globes.

In Year 2, the children enjoy learning all about the African savannah, Kenyan culture and tribes. They look at the types of major forests around the world, including their location and species of trees found there. The children learn all about rainforest and look in detail at the different layers. They compare these tropical forests to those found in our local area and visit Hothfield Common at different points throughout the year to learn about the changes that come with the seasons.
