Monitoring Progress

Houses
Each student, day or boarding, joins one of our six Houses. Each House is led by a teacher, the Head of House, whose role is to act as a conduit between the family and School and who will normally be the Head of House for the duration of your child's time at the school. This ensures continuity over the years and is an important and relaxed relationship.

The job of the Head of House is to oversee the academic progress and personal development of your child in conjunction with you and the Tutor. This is achieved through activities such as:

  • Regular reviews of progress and constant discussion with teachers
  • House drama and music
  • House charitable fund raising
  • House social activities
  • House competitions in sports, maths, science, languages, general knowledge, technology etc
  • Promoting your child's engagement in activities and school led expeditions and visits
  • Promoting leadership and responsibility for others

Tutors
Students also join a tutor group within the House of 10-20 boys and girls. The Tutor meets each student daily at registration and during extended weekly tutorials. The Tutors and Head of House work together as a team. Our tutor groups are:

 Year 7  Year 8 & 9  Year 10 & 11  Year 12  Year 13

Progress Reports
You receive a report on your child's progress four times each year. These reports are pithy and indicate progress against end of year targets as well as give guidance for future improvement. This means it is easy for you to see whether your child is on track and where they are heading. Intervention is discussed with you in the case of consistent under performance and your support is enlisted in bringing about change.

You are encouraged to make contact with your child's Tutor and/or Head of House whenever you wish and you should feel free to do so by phone or email. We can arrange for you to see your child's teachers at any stage and we encouarge parents to be in school as often as they wish and can manage. This is particularly important during the hormonal teenage years when your child will try to exclude you from what he/she is doing at school.

Consultation & Information Meetings
Once or twice a year we hold formal consultation meetings for face to face discussion with teachers. These meetings complement our progress reports and allow you to focus on specific issues. Given their importance, parents are expected to make every effort to attend. We also hold information evenings when we present information on topics such as choosing GCSEs, university entrance, e-safety, drugs, teenage health etc.

Careers and Higher Education Guidance
From Year 9, students are advised about future careers and how best to choose GCSE, A Level and university courses. Until recently, our specialist adviser worked as an admissions tutor and senior lecturer in one of the UK's leading universities and has a wealth of knowledge to assist your son or daughter through the university admissions process.
