Years 7-9

Our task in these years is to build confidence and to make sure the fundamentals are sound for study at GCSE and A level. It is also a time for students to explore new areas and develop skills that will allow them to be increasingly independent in their learning. For this reason, we do not encourage students to take GCSEs early unless they are likely to achieve an A*: quality is much more important than quantity.

We operate a 30 period week with six lessons each day lasting for 50min each. Students are set separately by ability in English, mathematics and science. The setting is flexible so that changes can be made easily to ensure students are appropriately challenged and supported. All students study:

Mathematics One of Spanish or German Music
English Classical Studies Drama
Biology (Y8/9) French (from Y8 onwards) Cookery
Chemistry (Y8/9) ICT Art & Design
Physics (Y8/9) Religious Studies Design & Technology
Science (Y7) Geography
Physical Education History  Personal, Social & Health Education
Games   Tutorial

The PE curriculum is broad and varied. The main Games for boys are rugby, hockey, cricket and athletics while for girls they are hockey, netball, rounders, tennis and athletics.

All students must enrol in an afternoon activity on each day, for which attendance is compulsory. The earliest an activity will finish is 1630 but many will go on until 1730 e.g. a sports team practice.
