Alumna awarded honorary doctorate
A huge congratulations to Liv Boeree (Franklins, 2002) who is being recognised with an honorary doctorate from the Department of Astrophysics at the University of Hull!
Liv is a British science communicator, television presenter and former professional poker player. After Ashford School she studied Astrophysics at the University of Manchester, where she gained a First Class Degree.
She became a World Series of Poker and European Poker Tour champion, and is the only female player in history to win both a WSOP bracelet and an EPT event. She was the #1 ranked female player from 2014-2016! Liv is a keen philanthropist and co-founded Raising for Effective Giving in 2014, a research and advisory non-profit that uses the philosophies and strategies of Effective Altruism to identify and raise money for the most globally impactful charities. She has since retired from poker, and is now focussed on education, keen to inspire others!
She said to us:
“Life has taken many twists and turns but these days I live in Austin, Texas with my partner Igor. I quit poker a few years ago to focus on my work as a speaker and writer specialising in the intersection between technology, risk and game theory. I remember my days at Ashford so fondly – sending lots of love over the pond to you all!”
