The Secret of GCSE Success? ‘Organisation and great teachers’
Lola H, Jasmin L, Abi W and Ruby O all stressed how important it was to start revising early. Abi revised ‘a lot’, starting in November, she took a short break for Christmas and then revised constantly right up to the exams. Lola’s advice is to focus energy and effort on the mock exams – “The mocks help you understand where you need to “go all in” with your revision”.
Ava C, one of the top performing pupils, began her exam preparation as soon as the GCSE year started in September. “I took it very seriously and got organised with my brother who was doing his A Levels. I made detailed annotations of all my textbooks, revised those notes, made flash cards with bullet points and never let my focus drift away. Hard work gets results.” Ava used a lot of tea and coffee as well as a couple of apps – Habit Rabbit and Study Bunny to help maintain her motivation.
Jack L didn’t use apps, “I did the traditional thing – flash cards with bullet points and lots of extra reading. Teachers were all very encouraging and the fast turn-around of past papers made a huge difference and motivated me no end.”
Joseph L added “I did very well, thanks to my teachers and doing lots of past papers. You can find a lot of past papers online and teachers will mark them and give you feedback. I couldn’t be happier with my results.”
Ruby O said: “I have to thank all my teachers; they were all great teachers – especially my English teacher Mrs Smith she helped me with extra reading and she marked extra exam papers with feedback really quickly. Mrs Towill my Biology teacher was also fantastic.”
Lola H said “I must thank Mr Grech, he was brilliant and funny. And Mrs Rayner, my great Art teacher. I loved my GCSE year.”
Teachers add
John Curry, Assistant Head (Middle School) said Pupils have shown great resilience and commitment to achieve a wonderful set of GCSE results. 84% of results being graded from 9 – 5, as well as 52% of all grades achieved within STEM subjects being 9 – 7. I was particularly impressed to see how hard pupils worked in the run up to the exams – both in their own time as well as with the support and hard work of their parents, guardians and teachers. There are many individual success stories; I am so pleased for them all. These results serve as a springboard to bright futures.”
Michael Hall, Headmaster, echoed these sentiments stating: “We are very proud of our students who have worked so hard to achieve these results. Their success lies in their determination to improve and succeed. We look forward to welcoming students back into to our Sixth Form to develop even broader profiles as we build towards success beyond the School and in life.”
