Date Posted: Tuesday 01 July 2025

On a beautiful Summer Tuesday, Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) faced the spirited youngsters of Ashford School’s 1st XI in a friendly cricket match that showcased tradition, talent, and a fabulous high tea/barbeque. With MCC’s 1000-member legacy playing against Ashford School’s ambitious youngsters, the he encounter was a celebration of the very best grass roots sports that cricket’s long traditions are based on.

In keeping with tradition, MCC elected to bat first. The MCC side, featuring seven ‘player members’ and four probationer members, who are aiming to play their way into full membership, posted an imposing 292 for 4 in 42 overs. The innings was dominated by the MCC’s probationary players, whose aggressive batting was impressive. A standout performance came from Max Aitken, a Kent Premier League cricketer with Leeds & Broomfield Cricket Club, who anchored the innings with a flurry of runs, steering MCC to a formidable total. For Ashford, the bowling effort was led by their young captain, Harry P (Year 13), who bowled with great determination despite the MCC’s relentless run scoring.

Ashford School’s reply began with optimism but faltered under the pressure of MCC’s disciplined bowling. The hosts were bowled out for 121, with MCC’s bowlers exploiting the less experienced side. Despite the defeat, Ashford’s spirit remained unbroken, epitomized by Harry P, who was awarded the ‘Spirit of Cricket Award’ for his leadership and sportsmanship.

Cricket isn’t just about runs and wickets. Ashford School’s hospitality delivered another legendary tea—featuring BBQ chicken and sausages, which earned high praise from the MCC contingent. The day also marked a historic moment for Ashford, as Harry Clifford, a Year 8 cricket prodigy and the youngest player in the 1st XI, took to the field with dreams of becoming the youngest-ever member of the MCC.

Ashley Cook, Ashford School’s cricket coach, described the day as “a great day, but not a victorious one,” reflecting on the School’s ”best-ever cricket season across our lower school teams (Years 7-10). Also our girls teams have celebrated great things, with the U13s finishing as Kent County runners-up and the U15s winning the County title. Looking ahead, I’d like Ashford School to secure an annual fixture against the MCC Ladies’ team. That would be a special day.”

Though MCC emerged victorious by 140 runs, the match was a testament to Ashford School’s growing cricketing prowess and their commitment to the game’s traditions. With young talents like Putland and Clifford leading the charge, the future of cricket at Ashford looks brighter than ever.
