At Ashford Prep School the Geography curriculum aims to teach the children about the different human and physical features throughout the world.
We try to deliver practical and hands on lessons to allow the children to explore, develop their understanding and acquire vital fieldwork skills.
From Year 3, children’s learning develops from understanding different climate zones and weather patterns to looking at how human and environmental activity has changed the world and local area around them. The children are encouraged to be hands-on with maps and compasses and will learn how to identify features on a map, read and understand grid references and how to use a compass.
An understanding of local and global Geography is embedded within the curriculum, with children learning about Kent and its features, as well as the Americas and Europe at a wider scale. Each year group spends time learning about relative trade and economic activities in set areas, and they learn to draw comparisons of how these activities function in different regions.
As much as possible, learning within the classroom is supported with learning outside of the classroom. Classes enjoy regular trips to the coast, nearby landmarks and local forests.
