Food Studies is a Key Stage 3 subject which is enjoyed through hands-on learning, creating delicious treats. Wonderful aromas often waft through the corridors! The ultimate aim of the subject is for all students to be able to make knowledgeable and healthy food choices, and to be able to cook for themselves and their family.
Throughout their learning in Food Studies, students focus on nutrition in food, food hygiene and health and safety within the kitchen. In Year 7, students are introduced to a range of basic cooking and kitchen skills, ranging from smoothie-making through to handling and cooking meat safely and effectively.
The skills learnt in Year 7 are developed in Years 8 and 9. Students have the opportunity to adapt and create their own recipes and experiment with different ingredients. They are able to utilise their skills and knowledge of health and safety and food hygiene to cook independently and in groups.
Beyond the weekly timetabled lessons, students also have the opportunity to participate in Cooking Club as part of the co-curricular programme. The School also regularly competes in internal and external cooking competitions.
