Silver Duke of Edinburgh Expedition
Twenty-seven enthusiastic pupils from Ashford School successfully completed their Silver Duke of Edinburgh Award expedition in the scenic village of Meopham, Gravesham — known as the longest village in the UK and just five miles from the River Thames.
Following a successful practice expedition across the South Downs, our pupils arrived well-prepared for the physical and mental challenges ahead. The weekend brought blistering summer heat, with temperatures peaking at 31°C, but spirits remained high.
Day One: Hitting the Trail
With sun cream applied and hats at the ready, students gathered at Hopehill Scout Campsite to meet their assessors and set off. At Silver level, the expedition requires seven hours of daily activity, including trekking, breaks, and working towards a group aim.
Each team had chosen a unique goal to achieve during their expedition, and the first day saw them navigating the beautiful (but sun-drenched) landscape. By the time they returned to camp, tired but proud, it was time to cook a well-earned hot meal and set up tents for the night.
Day Two: Navigational Challenges and Evening Football
The second day presented some of the toughest terrain the Meopham area has to offer. With steep hills and dense woodland, students relied heavily on their map-reading, compass work, and team coordination. Despite the intensity of the day, the energy didn’t stop when the trekking did — students were still playing football and other games well into the evening!
Final Day: The Finish Line in Sight
By the final day, fatigue was beginning to show — but so was the resilience. With the end in sight, students dug deep to complete their final stretch. Every single participant completed the expedition successfully, showing impressive navigational skills, teamwork, and perseverance.
Sam in Year 10, who has already set his sights on doing the DofE Gold Award, said: “When we got lost, we all kept our heads up high and knew that we would all get back on track no matter how lost we were. I learnt a lot about my friends, and we would have long debates about what we should do. It was amazing when we got home, we could just sit down and eat good food and a have a proper night’s sleep.”
Mr Simon Burke, Ashford School’s DofE Manager, said:
“I am incredibly proud of our participants and what they have achieved. They all showed high levels of resilience, grit and determination. I hope many of them will continue their journey by taking on the challenge of the Gold Award.”
This successful expedition was the culmination of months of training, preparation and teamwork. The Duke of Edinburgh Award programme not only reinforces the school’s values but also builds essential life skills such as leadership, independence and collaboration.
A heartfelt thank you goes to our dedicated volunteer assessors, without whom this opportunity would not have been possible. Their time, encouragement, and commitment to our students are deeply appreciated.
Well done to all our Silver Award participants — you’ve made Ashford School proud!
