“The Wedding Singer” – Review

Date Posted: Friday 21 March 2025

“The Wedding Singer” tells the story of Robbie Hart, a wedding singer in 1980s New Jersey who, after being dumped at the altar by his own fiancée, struggles with heartbreak while searching for happiness and creative inspiration. Eventually he falls for a waitress called Julia, who is engaged to someone else… Complicated? You bet! A funny and uplifting tale of love and self-discovery – that too!

The production showcased exceptional dedication from all the cast, crew, and band members. Particularly noteworthy were Elisha as Robbie, who was outstanding, Julia was played on different nights by Maegan G-S and Ishbel D who both put real passion and emotion into the role. Glen Glulia, played by Thomas F and Edan L gave the Donald Trump like character just the right mixture of capitalist menace and romantic comedy. The timing and comic genius of Harry N and Leo D-S were only matched for laughs by Alice G-C who played Robbie’s long-suffering, and ever hopeful mother Rosie. The whole cast were brilliant. As Mr. Hornsey noted, “They have set a very high bar for us to follow.”

The large chorus was also a key element of the production. Alyssa F had all the 80s disco moves practised to perfection!

Mr Hornsey with Band Leader and Musical Director Mrs Hall were supported by brilliant choreography designed by Mrs Bourne. Lighting and sound were created by Mr Smith.

Rehearsals were relentless, conducted twice weekly (Mondays and Fridays) from last September through to the performance in March. The production team benefited from having access to the set a few weeks before opening night. This allowed valuable technical rehearsals in Brake Hall.

The costume design deserves special celebration for its wonderful representation of 1980s fashion. Neon shirts, denim jackets, and some vibrant shell suits helped transport the audience directly to the era.

The musical elements were ‘unreal’. While challenging to coordinate during early rehearsals, they quickly evolved through the collaboration of the band and the cast, resulting in a an amazing and impressive musical performance.

Feedback from parents, teachers and friends was universally positive. Following the opening night, my family and teachers commented specifically on the outstanding quality of the singing, brilliant comedic acting, and the dynamic musical accompaniment. An amazing achievement!
