Charity Challenge ‘Ride for Rhinos’

Ben (Year 7, Merchants) has always been fascinated with African animals and has an exceptional fondness for the Big 5. After recently watching David Attenborough’s BBC iPlayer documentary, ‘Extinction: The Facts’, Ben has decided to raise money by completing a ‘Ride for Rhinos’ charity challenge. The documentary highlighted the plight of northern white rhinos and showed how poaching and intensive farming have caused the numbers to plummet.

This week Ben held an assembly in front of his fellow Year 7s to speak with them about his challenge and how the money he hopes to raise will be used to help protect rhinos from further endangerment and save them from extinction.

Ben’s Challenge

Ben is a keen cyclist and decided that a sponsored bike ride would be an equally fun and challenging way to help raise funds. He will be cycling along the famous Pilgrims Way which is Route 17 on the National Cycle Network. The journey will follow woodland tracks and quiet country lanes along the North Downs before entering Ashford and the finish line at Ashford School. He will be accompanied by his Dad and younger brother Toby (Ashford Prep School, Year 6, Navarre). They will set off together on Sunday 25 October at 10:00 and hope to cycle over 20 miles.

The Charity

Ben has set himself a target to raise £250 for SORAI (Save Our Rhino in Africa and India) which backs the charity Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary (UK). Care for Wild Rhino Sanctuary (UK) was established as a charity in 2020 to help raise funds towards the conservation of endangered species, in particular rhinos. The money raised by Ben will go towards funding anti-poaching schemes and providing sanctuary and care for the remaining wild rhinos.
