Ashford School encourages pupils to be the best they can be, but teachers also recognise that all children learn differently. Our aim is simple: to provide all students with skills for learning that will make them feel happy and confident learners.
The Learning Support Department at the Prep School includes Mrs Alison Thomas, SENCo, Mrs Leanne Royle, Assistant SENCo and a number of Pre-Prep and Prep Teaching Assistants. The team provides in-class and one-on-one support to children who are identified as requiring additional learning support.
The main methods of provision made by Ashford School are:
- Additional help and support from the class/subject teacher, including differentiated learning
- Short periods of time to work with Learning Support Assistant/teacher in a small group or individually
- In class support with adult assistance
- A programme of support from external/internal specialist to be practiced within class or as part of a withdrawal programme to work with a specialist at times best suited to the pupil
Extra support during individual and group lessons include a variety of highly structured, sequential, cumulative and systematic learning programmes. These address various learning areas, including literacy, numeracy, emotional regulation, sensory and physical, including gross and fine motor skills. One-to-one support takes place in the mornings and throughout the School day, during which step-by-step interventions, including WordShark and NumberShark, Touch Typing, Sensory Circuits and Phonic Reading Schemes, are delivered.
