School Captain receives United Learning Best in Everyone Award

Date Posted: Friday 24 June 2022

Congratulations to outgoing Head Boy Oli who has won United Learning’s Best In Everyone Award for Maths.

These annual awards honour individuals, teams and departments from schools across the Group for the exceptional contributions they have made to school and community life. This includes recognition for stand-out academic successes, sporting and musical achievements and commitment to leadership and service.

Earlier in the year, schools across the Group had submitted nominations which were then considered by a judging panel. There was a strong field of nominees in all categories this year and the judging panel had a tough task choosing the winners.

Oli impressed the judging panel with his enthusiasm for maths and commitment to the subject.  Nominating him, his teacher said he had an “appreciation and understanding of the subject that is much greater than what is found in the textbooks”.  He was also said to independently explore new and challenging mathematical topics, often focusing on mathematical physics, where he delves into areas covered at undergraduate level.

Speaking about his success, Oli said:

“I am extremely happy to have won the award but even more happy to have been nominated by teachers who I hold in such high regard. In the future I hope that the applications of maths broaden into other subjects where we might not typically expect to find it. I especially look forward to studying developments in the areas of philosophy and metaphysics where maybe we can answer questions such as: Why is time so stubborn? Is there a god? Why are we here?

2022 marks the tenth year that the awards have been held and a return to an in-person ceremony following two years of virtual celebrations. Bespoke videos announcing the winners were also posted on United Learning’s Twitter account to coincide with the live event, giving over 10,000 peers, colleagues and family at home the opportunity to join in the celebrations.

Congratulating Oli, Mike Hall, Headmaster at Ashford School, said:

“Oli once told me how much he had been inspired by his Maths teachers before his GCSE year, he has gone on to be one of our top academic students and hence thoroughly deserves this Award. One of the characteristics which I like about Oli is his willingness to lead and guide others; as such, he is an excellent role model and mentor to our younger students, both in the Senior and Prep School.”

Congratulations Oli, this is an incredible achievement and Ashford School is extremely proud of you!
