Tom Watts Travel Award 2021/22 Recipient Announced

Date Posted: Monday 06 June 2022

The ASA Committee is delighted to announce that the 2021/22 Tom Watts Travel Award has been awarded to K-Leigh Hargreaves (Merchants, 2018).

K-Leigh will be travelling to Córdoba in Argentina through Projects Abroad to work at an Equine Therapy Centre where she will be supporting people with disabilities. K-Leigh said about the opportunity:

“Ever since stumbling across the project, I have been incredibly excited to help support and improve the lives of the people who access this form of therapy. The project supports children and adults with disabilities through the use of horse riding sessions – helping to improve mental well-being as well as improve motor skills such as balance and coordination. I have seen the benefits of equine therapy first-hand during my volunteering work at home, so to be able to experience this in a completely new culture on the other side of the world will be exhilarating. I’m so grateful to receive this award, enabling me to do all of this. I can’t wait to get stuck in, but until then, I’ll be brushing up on my Spanish!”

K-Leigh is currently finishing her degree reading Psychology at Loughborough University, during which she undertook a placement year as an SEN Teacher, supporting children with autism. She hopes to pursue a career supporting children with disabilities and so this is a great opportunity for her to work in this area in a different country and culture.

K-Leigh’s trip fully embodies the spirit of Adventurous Learning and we look forward to hearing all about her travels upon her return.

Applications for next year’s award will open later this year. In the meantime, if you would like to find out how you can apply, please get in touch with the Alumni Office.
